John Ericsson papers

Abstract

John Ericsson was a Swedish-American inventor and mechanical engineer. He is perhaps best known for designing the Civil War ship U.S.S. Monitor, an ironclad warship with a revolutionary rotating turret. The John Ericsson papers consists of two letter-size folders of material and one oversize indenture. Included are letters, 1853-1879, written by Ericsson, primarily addressed to John O. Sargent.

Abstract The Olof Olsson Family Papers documents the personal and private life of the third President of Augustana College, Olof Olsson, and his family. Olof Olsson was born in Sweden in 1841. He and his wife, Anna Lisa Olsson, emigrated from Sweden to the United States in 1869. In 1876 Olof Olsson was offered a professorship at Augustana College and Theological Seminary, Rock Island, Illinois. Abstract Johan August Udden was born in Sweden in 1859 and emigrated to America with his family at the age of 2. He attended St. Ansgar Academy in Minnesota from 1873-1876, and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Augustana College in 1881. He returned to Augustana College to natural science and geology in 1888. While at Augustana, Udden supervised the geology museum, which had been started by Josua Lindahl.
